Tune into The Family Channel

In spring 2006, Rev. David Eversdyke, Lead Pastor at Charter Oak Church, delivered a series of sermons to his United Methodist congregation that highlights the issues and challenges of the Christian family today. As a LOGOS church, the members of Charter Oak are always seeking ways to be more effective at nurturing children and teens.

Dave interpreted some fresh ideas from Deuteronomy 6:5-9 for parents:

• Say “good night” to your kids every night…let them know you care.
• Ensure that kids get nine hours of sleep every night…they’ll be healthier. Sleep deprived children are an accident waiting to happen.
• Limit extracurricular activities. While they are valuable in moderation, more soccer and piano lessons do not prepare the young for dealing with life as an adult, nor do they make an eternal difference.
• Date your mate – parents in love and in relationship are strong models for children.
• Apply discipline consistently at all times. Children crave and are comforted by boundaries.
• Expect conflict from teens…be prepared to deal with it, not try to eliminate it.
• Seek the teachable moments in which real life lessons can be demonstrated through experiences.

Dave reminded his congregation that there is a very important hierarchy at work in every family that cannot be realigned: God first, parents second, and children third.
